Claws of the Dragon
In Barsaive a name is truly a thing of power: a True Name gives a Pattern stability and allows it to grow. Knowledge of a Name can also give one power over a Pattern; knowing a Pattern’s name is almost universally the first step to tying a Thread to a True Pattern.
It is important to draw the distinction between names and Names. Simply, only recognized proper names have power. All wolves share a similar patter, which is called “wolf,” but Wolf is not the Name, just a description. A Name is a sign, perhaps even a requirement, of uniqueness.
Names can be set quickly in a ritual or more organically simply by use. It is worth noting that many Namegivers use an informal name or nickname when meeting strangers, for knowing somebody’s Name gives one power over them; but as these nicknames become woven into the True Pattern of the individual, they in turn become Names.
